Well I guess I can answer that one myself, technology. We have been watching a lot of them on the Encore station. Some of them are still fun to watch, mostly the ones from the 60's and 70's. That was back before they had to have ALL the special effects you see in the movies now a days.
My husband is a huge fan of old westerns and we have a bunch on DVD. I like old movies in general (not just westerns) and I agree that technology has completely changed the film industry. Now, they don't even have to have a good story to have a successful movie.
I enjoy all types of old movies too. We have been watching some lately about the military and WWII. I also enjoy old Westerns with Gunsmoke and Big Valley two of my favorite old TV shows.
There have been a few good westerns in the last decade, the trouble is movies like everything else go through fads, for example the current trend is Comic book movies, who knows what the future will bring. In all honesty however the only westerns I find myself re-watching are from the Dollar Trilogy.
Sometimes I forget how good those westerns were until I actually sit down and watch one. I think we just don't have a lot of time these days, and when it comes to sitting down and watching a movie, we would prefer to see something we haven't seen before, which would be a newer movie.
Nothing impresses more than a western with John Wayne, cigar in his mouth, strong impression on his face, gun in hand, fighting the bad ones. Compare this to the nowadays fast speed action movies with a lot of unrealistic technology, and you know what I mean.
I'm not really a big fan of older movies or westerns. I don't know why but they just seem a little cheesy and such. Nowadays movies are much better but I'm more into the newer technology. Everyone has their own opinions.
Great point Lola. A good story seems to be hard to find in many movies lately. Also, like CarrieAnn said, technology has changed things a lot. It seems that the big technology advances have taken the place of good stories. It also has to do with the change in each generation's likes, needs, and interests. Young people thrive on extreme animation, animatronics, and fast paced action.
There are very few new movies that can compare to True Grit, Outlaw Josie Wales or Silverado.
As far as TV shows, it is amazing to me how Gunsmoke reruns can still hold young people's interest. They were very well made.
